New Zealand

Fiords, mountains and adventure in the land of the long white cloud.

Hobbiton

Hobbiton Movie Set

The famous film set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, in the rolling hills near Matamata. Guided tours take you through the Shire: hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn and the Party Tree. Book in advance; tours run daily. A must for fans and a charming stop even for non-fans.

Tongariro National Park

Tongariro National Park

New Zealand’s oldest national park and a dual UNESCO site (nature and culture). The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of the world’s best one-day hikes, past emerald lakes and volcanic terrain. Mount Doom from the films is here. Shorter walks and ski fields offer alternatives; check conditions before you go.

Auckland

Auckland & Sky Tower

New Zealand’s largest city sits between two harbours and is dotted with volcanoes. The Sky Tower offers 360° views; the harbour, Viaduct and beaches are ideal for a stroll. Waiheke Island (ferry) offers wineries and beaches. Auckland is the main gateway and worth a day or two before heading south.

Abel Tasman National Park

Abel Tasman National Park

Golden beaches, turquoise water and coastal bush at the top of the South Island. Walk the Abel Tasman Coast Track (multi-day or day sections), kayak between bays or join a water taxi and beach-hop. The climate is mild and the scenery is some of New Zealand’s most photogenic. Book huts and transport in advance in summer.
